Six Senses to stop drinking water import |
| Resort News |
 |
Resort and spa development company Six Senses has said it will discontinue offering imported bottled drinking water at its resorts and will instead opt for local and seasonal produce.
The company said commencing October 1, 2008 it will offer a choice of Six Senses Sparkling or Still, or local water that will help in avoiding shipping of drinking water great distances, often by air.
Six Senses said the initiative is in recognition of the its efforts to reduce carbon footprints resulting from shipping of water and adding value to community partnerships.
It said Six Senses drinking water is produced to the highest international drinking water EPA standards, being processed on-site at each one of the group’s resorts, using the Classic Crystal system.
Following stringent filtration, the initial step is reverse osmosis, followed by further ultra violet purification.
The water is then remineralised, with aeration being added to the sparkling style. Bottling is in glass only, sealed with an airtight ceramic stopper clipped in place with a metal clasp.
Although use of glass may be the costlier alternative, its use avoids the potential for cross-over contamination recently identified with some plastic bottles.

W Retreat & Spa - Maldives launches James Bond Promotion |
| News |
 |
The W Retreat & Spa–Maldives has launched a special James Bond promotion allowing you to live like the famous double agent; flirt with adventure by day and your Bond Girl by night.
The 5 nights package includes the following adrenaline filled experiences:
Begin your mission surveying the island on your 1 hour private speed boat hire. Riding the azure waters, you can spot the chic architecture encompassing the island, as well as the blinding white silhouette of the Away Spa. These are obvious targets for those wanting access to your exclusive getaway.
- SeaBob Lessons – Straight from the set of “Die Another Day”, this “water rocket” is a cross between a Jet Ski and body board and can propel you over and underneath the water at speeds of 20kmh. Get enough practice and the bad guys will never be able to catch up.
- Night Snorkeling – Late night quest? You can scout the underwater world with your night snorkeling excursion. Suit up and see what comes out after the sun sets and the stars light the sky. The thousands of fauna and corals found in the North Ari atoll are the most abundant in the Maldives.
- Parasailing – For your eyes only! Fly high and get a surreal view of the island and the Indian Ocean. Even though this could take your mind off the adventure, you will still get a rush gliding through the air.
- Kite Surfing - Ride the waves and learn to fly across water. Private kite surfing lessons will give you the skills to help maneuver in any situation; a pseudo “License to Kite Surf” if you will.
- Take your Bond Girl her for a martini at 15BELOW, one of the only true nightclubs in the Maldives. There you can tell the W’s mixologists which one of the 90 vodkas you prefer. The resident DJ will spin groove beats for those brave enough to let their guard down.

Diving delights at Iru Fushi Beach & Spa Resort, Maldives |
| Resort News |
 |
The Maldives offers some of the best diving in the world and there is now a new atoll to pull on the fins and explore. Surrounding the soon-to-open Iru Fushi Beach & Spa Resort on the pristine Noonu Atoll are thirty dive sites with an abundance of marine life ranging from magnificent manta rays and rare humpback turtles to regal reef sharks and a rich variety of colourful corals.
What’s more, divers at Iru Fushi can also visit Snow White and Christmas Tree – not quite what visitors would expect from the Maldives!
Iru Fushi, with its unspoilt landscape and virgin waters, offers fabulous diving for both beginners and the more experienced. Diving here is relatively easy compared to other atolls because of the wide channels, shallow depths and gentle currents. The sites range from 10 minutes to an hour’s journey by the diving boat, called a dhoni. It’s also easy to pick up a few memorable souvenirs as most of the sites are ideal for videographers and photographers thanks to the shallow reefs.
The house reef is located near the diving school and gently slopes down 18 metres to a sandy bottom. Covered with sponges and corals and teeming with neon coloured reef fish, it provides the perfect setting for beginners to experience a breathtaking first dive and a free trial dive in the lagoon is offered to all guests.

| Rock gently on a Dhoni |
| Resort Report |
"But what do you do there?” asked a friend who knows me well when I told her I was going to the Maldives for a holiday. "It’s just beaches, isn’t it?” Perhaps she was thinking that because there’s no grand shopping or rocking nightlife to enjoy, the Maldives equals zilch. As I relaxed on the oversized, plump cushions on the sun deck of a dhoni, while the sail above me billowed in the wind, I realised the Maldives means excitement.
Boredom, nothing to do; hassles, stress, traffic, other people’s children; tired buffets and tiresome staff are unheard of there, if you choose the right resort. And with over 90 islands open for guests and about 50 more resorts in the planning stage, there is a huge choice and great competition to offer something unique.
That’s what drew me to Dhoni Island. It’s a tiny island of lush vegetation and leaning palms, with a beach of fine white sand all around it, set in a translucent lagoon brimming with cocktail-coloured fish. Just 164m by 96m (that’s less than four acres in area), it lies in the centre of Ari Atoll, 90km from the capital, Male, itself only 90 minutes flying time from Colombo.
The island is unique because each couple (never more than 12 guests at a time and absolutely no children) stays on a dhoni. A dhoni is a Maldivian boat used for fishing and transport, hand-crafted from local timber with a broad beam and steered by a helmsman using his foot to control a tiller. Adapted from a design evolved over two millennia, the dhonis based at Dhoni Island have been custom-made, each with a luxurious stateroom, saloon, sun deck and fishing platform, as live-aboard sail and engine-powered vessels.
