Maldives: Best Country Brand for Beach, Rest & Relaxation

Travel News

Looking for Rest and Relaxation? The best place to find it, is in the Maldives
Looking for Rest and Relaxation? The best place to find it, is in the Maldives

Maldives has been ranked as the Best Country Brand for Beach and Best Country Brand for Rest and Relaxation for the year 2008, according to press release issued by Maldives Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB). MTPB said Maldives also ranked 2nd in the Best Country Brand for Natural Beauty and 3rd in the Best Country Brand for Resort and Lodging Options. The Country Brand Index was officially released during London’s World Travel Market in November 2008.

According to MTPB, Country Brand Index is a comprehensive study of approximately 2,700 international business and leisure travelers from nine countries. It is conducted by Future Brand, a global brand consultancy company and Weber Shandwick which is a public relations firm.

MTPB also informed that the main marketing slogan for the destination Maldives “Maldives, the Sunny Side of Life” and the wellness and relaxation aspect is promoted under the theme of “Maldives, the Spiritual Side of Life” was ranked number one in these two areas. Maldives emerged as the number one in both Beach and Rest and Relaxation categories after successfully competing with countries like Tahiti, Bahamas and Australia.

Maldives also won the 'World's Most Romantic Destination' award at the World Travel Awards last year.

Maldives plans against becoming Atlantis

News

Over 80 percent of the Maldives' are less than 1 metre above mean sea level.
Over 80 percent of the Maldives' are less than 1 metre above mean sea level.

The Maldives new president said his eye-catching plan to buy land to relocate his low-lying archipelago nation when the seas rise was exaggerated by the media, but highlighted the need to plan for climate change.

Mohamed Nasheed, a former democratic activist who was jailed repeatedly by former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, made history in October when he defeated the three-decade incumbent in the Indian Ocean nation's first-ever multi-party elections.

Shortly after his election, he made world headlines by saying his cash-strapped government wanted to buy a new homeland for Maldivians in case the oceans rose and turned his country into another Atlantis -- the fabled city swallowed by the sea.

"How it later went on and on and on in the media I think is a little exaggeration on what it is," he told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

Maldives is one of the world's most endangered nations due to global warming, which could see many of its low-lying islands submerged if a U.N. climate change's panels predictions about sea levels rising by up to 59 cm (two feet) by 2100 are correct. Over 80 percent of the Maldives' 1,192 islands and atolls are less than 1 metre above mean sea level, with the highest point about 3 metres (10 feet) above sea level.

"The wider and the stronger issue is still that you cannot mitigate climatic change or the impacts of climatic change without good governance. And I think that's the core of the issue," he said.

Nasheed since there was no way to avoid that, the country of 369,000 mostly Sunni Muslims, known mostly worldwide as a luxury tourist haven, needed to make its own plans.

Last Of Kandholhudhoo Islanders Move

News

Sunset at the island of Dhuvaafaru
Sunset at the island of Dhuvaafaru

Displaced islanders of Raa atoll Kandholhudhoo have all been relocated to their newly-built homes in Dhuvaafaru, according to Haveeru.

A statement by the Maldives National Defence Force, which had helped to transfer the islanders, said 1709 of the 2040 Kandholhudhoo residents had now moved to their new homes.

Only those away from the islands had not yet moved.

Kandholhudhoo islanders had been living in temporary accommodation on Meedhoo, Alifushi, Maduvvaree, Hulhudaffaaru and Ungoofaaru. Dhuvaafaru has had 600 houses, three schools, a health centre, office buildings, a sewerage system and a power grid built at an estimated cost of US$30 million.

The project was funded by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society.

Petition Calls For Total Ban On Shark Hunting

Environmental News

There's nothing left
"There's nothing left"

The appeal, which was prepared by marine biologists at the Banyan Tree resort conservation lab, asks for a complete ban on shark hunting and the harvesting of sea turtle eggs as well as greater enforcement of protection for sea turtles.

According to Robert Tomafetti, a marine biologist at Banyan Tree, although sea turtles were “protected on paper”, in reality, some atolls were not adhering to the law.

Abdullah Nasir, permanent secretary for the ministry of fisheries, said it has “taken longer than necessary” for the government to act but the ministry was in full agreement that shark hunting must be “phased out”.

He added protection of sea turtles had been included in the ministry’s budget.

Talking on behalf of MATI, secretary general Sim Ibrahim said the organisation would “support” the petition.

Speaking to Minivan News on Tuesday, Guy Stevens, a senior marine biologist at Four Seasons resort, said the last five years had seen a “huge decline” in the numbers of sharks in the Maldives.

The law as it stands gives protection to reef sharks, on the assumption that these are the sharks tourists come to the Maldives to see, but not to ocean sharks.

“But the end result,” said Stevens, “is that we have someone at customs who can’t tell the difference between a shark caught in a reef and in the ocean.

“And it’s continued to the point where there’s nothing left.”

The Kuda Giri Wreck
South Male Atoll

Discover plenty of nudibranchs and flatworms

Discover plenty of nudibranchs and flatworms.

To most people this is a wreck dive since the site is dominated by the small wreck that lies upright on the seabed between 30 and 15 metres depth. However the name of the site described the giri, or pinnacle, that is found nearby and this too could be considered a dive in its own right.

You will probably drop to the deepest part of this wreck to begin your dive. However, the currents are often absent or negligible so this is one site the less experienced diver can enjoy. They may wish to stay toward the shallower bow section. The wreck was sunk on purpose to form an artificial reef and has been well and truly colonised by orange, red and yellow sponges, as well as tubastrea cup coral.

When you are diving around the wreck you should look out for the big schools of glassfish that hover together en masse in the interior, little gobies peeking out from various holes, and a large school of batfish that seems to stay around the wreck. Turtles, humphead wrasse and other large reef predators will also put in frequent appearances. The wreck is penetrable in via a couple of different methods, but is small and any group penetration needs to be handled in an orderly fashion.

Outside the wreck the sandy bottom features garden eels, and shrimp and goby partnerships. You can spot leaf-fish in the broken staghorn, and there are plenty of nudibranchs and flatworms in and around the pinnacle.

Kuda Giri Wreck Reef Basics: Wreck and pinnacle dive
