There is an art to planting coral gardens
‘There is an art to planting coral gardens’

Imagine planting an underwater garden: in Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, they have just done that. Spotted all over their lagoon, are coral gardens of various ages, ranging from four months to five years. Each teems with rainbow-coloured fish. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, the gardens give a much-needed boost to coral growth and aid the recovery of the house reef, essential since 1998, when El Nino killed 70-90 per cent of the coral in central Maldives. Banyan Tree was particularly hard hit with 98 per cent of its coral bleached.

The geographical nature of the Maldives means that reefs will forever play a crucial role both in its existence – reefs are responsible for island formation and act as a natural barrier against beach erosion – but also in two of its major industries, fishing and tourism.

Planting corals

The project is headed by director of conservation Abdul Azeez, who describes underwater gardening as his “passion”.

“There is an art to planting coral gardens,” says Azeez. “Planting corals of the same species in close proximity ensures they are more likely to benefit from successful fertilisation during coral spawning.” The shape and direction of each coral species has to be visualised when deciding which to plant next to the other, he adds.

Baa atoll says no to plastic bags

Eco News

They’re in the lagoon, on the beach, on the corals, damaging our environment.
They’re in the lagoon, on the beach, on the corals, damaging our environment.

A campaign aimed at reducing and eventually eradicating the use of plastic bags was launched on Friday in Baa atoll.

The “Say no to plastic bags” campaign, run by Kendhoo Club, an island association on Kendhoo, and Sonevaa Fushi resort, will be distributing cloth bags to each household in the atoll to encourage people to stop using plastic bags.

“We initiated this programme, because we see plastic bags everywhere,” said Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, president of Kendhoo Club. “They’re in the lagoon, on the beach, on the corals, damaging our environment.”

Plastic bags are not biodegradable and take 10 to 20 years to disintegrate. With no proper waste management facility in the islands, plastic bags have been found littered on the beaches and in lagoons; they are known to destroy live coral and adversely affect the marine life in Maldives.

Ministry bans reef shark fishing

FA historic move towards a total ban
A historic move towards a total ban

The ministry of fisheries and agriculture has extended the moratorium on reef shark fishing to cover the whole of the Maldives, as part of a historic move towards a total ban on both reef and oceanic shark hunting.

A ten-year moratorium was imposed in 1998 to cover the seven atolls where tourism had been established on the assumption that many tourists visited the Maldives to see sharks.

But with the spread of tourism to almost all atolls in the country, the ministry has decided to expand the ban to encompass all reef shark fishing across the Maldives within a 12 nautical mile radius.

Marie Saleem, a reef ecologist at the marine research centre and one of those at the forefront of the campaign to ban shark hunting, said she was both “excited” and “relieved” to hear that the efforts of those who had been pushing for a ban were “finally fruitful”. Reef shark populations would now need to be monitored as a matter of urgency in order to observe the effectiveness of the ban, she said.

Total ban

Abdullah Nasir, permanent secretary of the fisheries ministry, has said: “The fisheries law clearly tells us that we can protect any marine species if we feel that it’s threatened or endangered for any reason.”

Although oceanic shark fishing is yet to be prohibited by law, Nasir said the ministry was “working towards that” and had set itself a target of banning the export of shark products, both oceanic and reef, within one year.

Hammerhead Point
Ari Atoll

Scalloped weaving heads often appear in the morning
Scalloped weaving heads often appear in the morning

Also known as Madivaru Corner
This site is in fact located in Rasdhoo Atoll, a short hop north east of Ari Atoll, and is often dived by liveaboards travelling between South Male and Ari Atoll. However it is certainly more than a stop-gap dive site and is in fact often considered to be the highlight of many Maldives liveaboard trips.

You will probably find yourself kitting up for this dive in the early morning but it is one that will certainly clear the sleep from your eyes. The reason is in the name, since it is often referred to as Hammerhead Point. Scalloped weaving heads often appear in the morning on the channel's outside corner just offshore from the island of Madivaru, and the schools can be very impressive in size. The reef features a ridge that rises up to about 10 metres below which you can explore a number of overhangs and caverns between a depth of 25 and 30 metres. Keep an eye out for sightings of dog-toothed tuna, dolphinfish and schools of black snapper.

There may be one or two sections on this dive where you have to work a little against the current but the rewards can be great. After witnessing the parade of hammerhead sharks as well as other meaty pelagic fish, not to mention the smaller activity on the reef wall, you will return the boat full of excitement and looking forward to the excited breakfast chatter.

Hammerhead Point Reef Basics: Wall dive
Depth: 10 - 35m
Visibility: 15 - 25m
Currents: Can be strong
Surface Conditions: Can be choppy
Water Temperature: 27 - 30°C
Experience Level: Intermediate to advanced
Number of dive sites: 1
Diving Season: All year round
Distance: Just off Madivaru, Rasdhoo Atoll
Access: Maldivian liveaboard
