Work is underway to promote Maldives as a special destination for eco tourism lovers, Tourism Minister Dr. Ali Sawaadh has said.

Minister Sawaadh said special projects are underway to transform Maamakunudhoo region in to a special destination for eco tourism lovers. Sawaadh said Maamakunudhoo region is inhabited by huge whale shark population and has many suitable islands with sandy beaches and clear lagoons. He said the region was selected for development of eco tourism after careful study.

“Eco tourism is one fast developing sector of this industry, tourism which protects natural resources is fast developing in many countries” Ali Faiz who works in the tourism industry said.

According to Faiz, in countries where logging is carried out, introduction of eco tourism has helped to prevent increase in logging, preserved the jungles to for tourism and helped local communities. Ali Faiz said it is already late to introduce eco tourism in Maldives, and that it should have been done years ago.

A world-wide event planned to create
awareness about global warming

The Maldives took part in the “Earth Hour” celebrations for the first time, on Saturday night. “Earth Hour” is a world-wide event planned to create awareness about global warming and climate change.

Residents of Malé, the resorts and other islands took part in the celebration by turning off all the electrical equipment that weren’t absolutely necessary between 8:30pm and 9:30pm. After the hour had passed, the State Electric Company (STELCO) announced that during the one hour the power usage had come down to 23,000kw from 26,000kw. STELCO’s engineer Ibrahim Rauf said that it was a 3MW decrease. He further said that as a result of the event, they had saved 810 litters of diesel and kept 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide gas from being released into the atmosphere.

The Fesdu Wreck
Ari Atoll

Watch the great barracudas chase after schools of fusiliers
Watch the great barracudas chase after schools of fusiliers

This 30 metre long fishing trawler lies on a sandy bottom (hurrah!) having been sunk to form an artificial reef, and after a slow start it has, over the past decade or so, become fully colonized with marine life. The bow of the wreck points north and at 30 metres is slightly deeper than the stern which sits at 27 metres deep.

The surface of the wreck has become encrusted with sponges and well as hard and soft corals, tubastrea and feather-stars. Look out for the variety of nudibranchs to be found here feeding on the sponges.

Within the wreck you can spot a vast array of life including huge, dense clouds of glassfish in the wheelhouse as well as anthias, butterflyfish and slow-moving lionfish. There are also more substantial residents in what is quite a large wreck so look out for moray eels, red-mouthed groupers and blue-fin trevally.

Most dive guides will recommend against penetration since the passages are very narrow and there are a limited number of exits. Most dives consist of a full circle of the wreck and an exploration of its shallowest sections before then moving over in a westerly direction to a nearby thila. You will probably explore around this pinnacle until you arrive at its shallowest section at around 12 metres, before then ascending to your safety stop.

Fesdu Wreck Basics: Wreck dive and pinnacle
Depth: 12 - 30m
Visibility: 10 - 25m
Currents: Gentle
Surface Conditions: Normally calm
Water Temperature: 27 - 30°C
Experience Level: Intermediate
Number of dive sites: 1
Diving Season: All year round
Distance: 1km southwest of Fesdu on the north side of Viligili Falhu
Access: Maldive liveaboard
